You can legally live and work remotely in Dubai for up to a year on the Virtual Working Programme visa, often called the Dubai digital nomad visa. The city is built for remote workers, and the order of the steps matters. Here is the playbook.
What Is the Dubai Digital Nomad Visa?
The Virtual Working Programme is a one-year residence permit that lets you live in Dubai while working remotely for a company outside the UAE. Eligibility:
- Proof of employment with a company outside the UAE, or proof of business ownership with at least 1 year of activity
- A minimum monthly income set by the programme
- Health insurance valid in the UAE
- A valid passport
- Proof of income, such as recent payslips or bank statements
The application is made online through the official Dubai channels. The exact requirements, fees and processing times are set by the authorities and change, so check the official Dubai Virtual Working Programme page before you apply.
What About Taxes?
The UAE has no personal income tax. As a digital nomad here:
- Your UAE-source income (if any) is tax-free
- Your foreign-source income may or may not be taxable in your country of origin depending on tax residency rules
- Tax residency in the UAE depends on the rules set by the UAE authorities, including days spent in the country; check them
- You need to formally break tax residency in your home country (talk to an accountant — Italian, French, and German tax authorities are particularly aggressive about this)
This is not a tax-avoidance scheme — it is a residence change. Do it right.
Where Should I Live?
For digital nomads, the key factors are: fast internet, coworking access, a community of other remote workers, and a rent that fits your budget.
Dubai Marina / JBR
The classic nomad choice. Beach access, dozens of cafés that double as workspaces (Common Grounds, Tom & Serg, Dose), and a high concentration of expats. Best for first 6 months.
Business Bay / Downtown
A more professional feel, close to DIFC. Best for remote workers who want a business-district base.
JLT (Jumeirah Lake Towers)
A less touristy choice with metro access and plenty of restaurants. Many long-term nomads end up here.
Al Furjan / Discovery Gardens
A more residential, suburban option, further from the city by metro.
Apartment Setup Costs
We do not publish a rent table: rents and deposits vary by building and contract and we have no dated data to quote. An annual lease usually involves a security deposit, a broker fee and registration costs, and payment by cheque in advance; ask each landlord or agent for the amounts in writing. Why Most Nomads Start with Monthly Furnished, Not Annual
Annual rentals in Dubai require: Emirates ID (you do not have it yet), a UAE bank account (you do not have it yet), payment in 1-4 cheques upfront (cash flow shock), and signing a 12-month commitment in a city you barely know. After 3-6 months once you know the city, you decide if you want to commit to annual.
Internet, Coworking, and Daily Logistics
- Apartment Wi-Fi: ask for the connection speed of the apartment before you book
- Coworking: Astrolabs (Marina), Nasab (Al Quoz, more design-focused), Letswork (multiple locations, day-pass app), A4 Space, WeWork
- Mobile SIM: Du or Etisalat. Tourist SIMs at the airport, real plans once you have your Emirates ID
- Banking: Wise or Revolut as bridge; once you have Emirates ID open with Emirates NBD, FAB, or Mashreq
The 30-Day Setup Plan
- Days 1-3: arrive, check into Cosmica apartment, get tourist SIM at airport, sleep
- Days 4-10: submit Virtual Working visa application, do medical fitness test, complete Emirates ID biometrics
- Days 11-21: receive Emirates ID, open UAE bank account, switch to local SIM plan
