Things to Do in Dubai Beyond Shopping Malls

Published on ·by Cosmica Rentals Team·2 min read

Yes, Dubai has enormous malls. But reducing the city to shopping is like reducing Rome to the Colosseum. There is a whole city beyond the retail — and it is more interesting than most visitors expect.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood

This is old Dubai, before the oil money. Wind-tower houses, narrow lanes, small galleries, and the excellent Coffee Museum. The area around the Dubai Creek feels like a different city entirely. Take an abra (traditional water taxi) across the creek for one dirham and explore the Gold Souk and Spice Souk on the other side.

Alserkal Avenue — Dubai's Art District

In the industrial area of Al Quoz, a collection of warehouse galleries shows contemporary art from the Middle East and beyond. Entry is free. The cafés are excellent. It is where Dubai's creative class hangs out — designers, artists, filmmakers. Thursday evenings are the best time to visit when new exhibitions open.

Kayaking on the Creek or Canal

Rent a kayak on the Dubai Water Canal at sunrise and paddle past the skyscrapers in perfect silence. It is surreal and beautiful. Creek kayaking offers a more traditional experience, passing dhows and heritage buildings. Several operators run guided sunset tours.

Hatta — Mountains an Hour Away

Drive an hour east and you reach the Hajar Mountains. Hatta Dam is a turquoise lake surrounded by rocky peaks. You can kayak, hike, mountain bike, or just sit and absorb the silence. It is the complete opposite of the city, and it is free. Pack a picnic.

Desert Safari — Do It Right

Skip the mass-market evening safaris with 30 other jeeps. Book a morning safari with a small operator who takes you to quieter dunes. The light at sunrise is extraordinary. Sandboarding, camel encounters, and Bedouin-style coffee in silence — that is the real desert experience.

Jumeirah Public Beach

Kite Beach and Jumeirah Open Beach are free, clean, and uncrowded on weekday mornings. The view of the Burj Al Arab from Kite Beach is one of the best free views in the city. Food trucks line the boardwalk. Bring a mat, a book, and sunscreen.
