Salone del Mobile 2027: The Complete Visitor's Guide to Milan Design Week

Publicado el ·por Cosmica Rentals Team·4 min read

Every April, Milan stops being a city and becomes the world's largest design exhibition. The official trade fair — Salone del Mobile — fills 200,000 square meters at Fiera Rho. The parallel Fuorisalone takes over every neighborhood with installations, parties, and pop-up exhibitions. Together they pull in over 350,000 visitors from 180 countries. If you are coming for the first time, here is what you actually need to know.

When Is Milan Design Week 2027?

Salone del Mobile traditionally runs in the second or third week of April. Expected 2027 dates: 13-18 April 2027 (final dates announced by Salone del Mobile organization). Fuorisalone runs in parallel across the city.

Salone del Mobile vs Fuorisalone — What's the Difference?

Salone del Mobile is the official trade fair at Fiera Rho-Pero (just outside the city). Ticketed entry. Mostly trade-focused, with public access on the weekend. This is where the big furniture brands launch new collections.

Fuorisalone is the unofficial citywide festival. Free entry to most events. Installations in showrooms, palazzi, courtyards, abandoned warehouses. Concentrated in specific "districts" (see below).

The Main Fuorisalone Districts

Brera Design District

The historic heart of design week. High-end brands, big installations, lots of cocktail receptions. Walkable streets, atmospheric courtyards. Get here early to avoid queues.

5VIE — Art + Design District

The five-street area near Piazza Affari focuses on craft, art, and emerging designers. Smaller scale, less crowded, often the most rewarding for curators.

Tortona Design Week

Industrial-feel district near Porta Genova. Bigger spaces, more international brands. Famous for the Superstudio Più exhibitions.

Ventura Centrale and Lambrate

Eastern districts that lean experimental. Ventura Centrale (in old train tunnels under Stazione Centrale) is always a highlight.

Isola Design District

Around Garibaldi/Isola. Focus on sustainable and circular design. Younger crowd, more interactive.

Where to Stay for Design Week

Hotels triple in price and book out 4-6 months ahead. Apartments win on price, space (room for samples, packaging, swag), and central location.

Best neighborhoods by visitor type:

  • Buyers and exhibitors at Salone (Rho) — Stay near Cadorna or Garibaldi for direct train access.
  • Fuorisalone-focused visitors — Brera, Centro, or Tortona for walkability.
  • Lambrate/Ventura focus — Stay in Isola or Loreto for quick connections.

How to Plan Your Days

Day 1 — Salone del Mobile (Rho)

Take the M1 metro to Rho Fiera (40 min from city center). Allow 6-8 hours. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water. Lunch options inside the fair are mediocre — eat a big breakfast.

Day 2 — Brera + 5VIE

Start in 5VIE around 10:00, lunch in Brera, finish the afternoon at the bigger Brera installations. End with aperitivo at one of the courtyards.

Day 3 — Tortona + Lambrate

Heavier industrial design vibes. More walking-friendly with the tram. Plan dinner in the area.

What Should I Wear?

Design week dress code is "creative professional" — tasteful, well-cut, often head-to-toe black. Sneakers are universally acceptable as long as they are sharp. You will be walking 15-20 km/day, so prioritize comfort.

How to Get the Most Out of Design Week

  • Download the Fuorisalone app — official map and event list, indispensable
  • Book restaurant reservations 3-4 weeks in advance, especially for dinner
  • Skip the most-hyped exhibitions in peak afternoon hours — return at 18:00+ when crowds thin
  • Take advantage of the late evening openings — many showrooms stay open until 21:00 or 22:00
  • Pack a tote bag — you will collect dozens of catalogs
