Naples as a Base for the Amalfi Coast: Day Trips, Logistics, and Why It Beats Sorrento

Publié le ·par Cosmica Rentals Team·3 min read

Conventional travel advice says: stay in Sorrento or Positano for the Amalfi Coast. We disagree. Hotels in Positano cost €600-1,200/night in July. Sorrento triples in price and triples in tourists. Bus traffic on the coast road is gridlock from 10:00 to 18:00. There is a smarter play: base in Naples, day-trip the coast, save thousands.

Why Naples Works as a Base

  • Direct ferries to Sorrento, Capri, Positano, Amalfi from the port of Beverello — 35-90 min depending on destination
  • Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii and Sorrento — €4 one-way, runs frequently
  • Apartments cost 60-70% less than equivalent quality in Positano or Sorrento during peak season
  • Real city to come back to at night — proper restaurants, no tourist trap energy after 21:00
  • Airport 15 minutes away — Sorrento is 90 minutes from Naples airport in good traffic

The Daily Loop That Works

Wake up in your Naples apartment. Walk 15 minutes to Molo Beverello. Take a ferry at 09:30 to Capri or Positano. Spend the day. Catch the 17:00 ferry back. Aperitivo on the Lungomare. Dinner at a local pizzeria. Sleep in a city that is alive — not in a coastal resort that closes at 22:30.

How Do I Get to Capri?

Ferries leave from Molo Beverello (Naples port) roughly every 45 min from 07:00 to 19:00. Fast ferry: 50 min, ~€25 one-way. Buy ahead in high season — they sell out. Once on Capri: funicular up to the town, then either walk or take the local bus to Anacapri. Spend at least 6 hours.

How Do I Get to Positano?

Direct seasonal ferry (April-October) from Beverello takes ~80 min. Otherwise: train to Sorrento (Circumvesuviana, 60 min), then SITA bus or local ferry from Sorrento to Positano. Doable in a day but tight. Better as part of an Amalfi loop: Positano → Praiano → Amalfi → ferry back to Salerno → train to Naples.

What About Pompeii and Vesuvius?

Pompeii: 35 min by Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi. Go early — open at 09:00, hot by 12:00 in summer. Vesuvius: from Pompeii station catch the EAV bus to the crater hike trailhead (€11 round trip, runs hourly).

What About Ischia and Procida?

Procida is our personal favorite — quieter than Capri, prettier than Positano, and an easy 35-min ferry. Ischia is bigger, has thermal baths, and works as a 1- or 2-night side trip if you want a real beach pause.

The Cost Comparison That Settles It

Strategy5-night July trip (couple)
Base in Positano (avg quality hotel)€4,200-6,000
Base in Sorrento (3-star hotel)€1,800-2,800
Base in Naples (Cosmica apartment) + ferries€900-1,400 + ~€120 ferries

When Should I Pick Positano Instead?

Three cases: (1) honeymoon and money is no object, (2) you specifically want the cliff-hotel-balcony Instagram experience, (3) you are traveling with limited mobility and the Naples-Positano ferry transfer is too much. Otherwise, base in Naples.

Ready to Plan?

Browse our Naples apartments in the Chiaia, Mergellina, and Centro Storico zones — all 15-20 minutes walking from the port of Beverello. Book direct and use the savings on a great Capri lunch.
